Methamphetamine production leaves behind five to six pounds of toxic waste for every pound or meth produced. These toxic by-products continue to affect future occupants and the surround environment for many years to come.
Common ingredients and by-products of methamphetamine production include iodine, red phosphorous, anhydrous ammonia, sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric and sulfuric acid, lithium, sodium, solvents, and phosphine gas. Symptoms of prolonged or overexposure to these compounds include irritation of the eyes, skin and respiratory system, dermatitis, skin burns, pulmonary edema, asphyxia, and even death.
For every pound of meth produced, five to six pounds of hazardous waste is also generated. This waste is frequently poured down sink drains, dumped and burned on-site, or abandoned on another piece of property, thus, affecting the air, water and soil. During clean-up operations, serious injury to the worker and/or others can occur. Therefore, a remediation plan for clean-up is vital as well as confirmation sampling to determine and document the success of the remediation effort.
Safety, Environmental Laboratories and Consulting Services specializes in the assessment of former methamphetamine laboratories. We can assist you with the identification of the presence of meth and develop a plan for the remediation of the clandestine laboratory, and perform confirmation sampling to verify the success of the effort.
